William8, Nathan7

William Vincent8 Carman (Nathan7, Caleb6, Caleb5, Caleb4, Caleb3, John2, John1) was born 24 February 1829 at New Baltimore, Greene County, New York. He married 11 January 1860 in Chicago, Cooke County, Illinois to Amelia Tompkins. She died in Rennselarville, Albany County, New York. They had no children.

William served in the Civil War with Company K, 2nd Regiment, New York Mounted Rifles, enlisting on 29 December 1863 at Buffalo, New York.  He was captured at Gaines Mills, Virginia (part of the Battle of cold Harbor) and taken prisoner on 2 June 1864, held at Richmond from 3 June until 8 June, and then taken to the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia, where he died on 21 September 1864.  His cause of death was what we know today as Scruvy. He is buried at Grave Number 9420 at what is now National Cemetery, Andersonville, Macon County, Georgia.

"George: I visited Andersonville Prison (Cemetery) this spring and found the grave of William Vincent Carman, my GG-uncle. His grave number is as you listed it but they have him recorded as W.W.CArman. I spoke to the senior ranger there and they checked their records and realized there was  an error but wouldnt correct it as those markers were put up before the park services took over the cemetery. Just a little info for you records"...

I have also have visited his wife's grave in Renselarville, N.Y. not far from Stanton Hill where the Carmans settled after the Revolution. (My side anyhow). She, his wife was a Tompkins and is buried in their family plot there. In his will he had wished to be buried beside her , but sadly that didnt work out."
