Waters Carman (he deriving his given name from the Waters family) was born 20 September 1811 in Pennsylvania, died 4 October 1878 in Oregon. He married first on 3 December 1835 in Sangamon County, Illinois to Lavinia Buckman, born 20 December 1819 in New York, died 20 August 1846 in Sangamon, Sangamon County, Illinois. He married second in September 1852 to Lucretia Allan Gurney, born 1804, died 1902. Here we have one of the stories that tie
back over into
Abraham
Lincoln, Waters herein being referred to
as Walters Carman: "Abraham Lincoln built the boat spoken of in his
biography. He began in March, 1831, just as the deep snow went off. Mr. Roll
made the pins for putting the boat together. They made a canoe to go with the
boat as a yawl. John Seaman and Walters Carman got into it to take the first
ride. It upset with them, and floated away while they took refuge in a tree.
Lincoln saved them by swimming to the tree with a log, having a long rope
attached. After getting all on it, those on shore drew it in.
(John Seaman mentioned is son of daughter of Charles
Broadwell's brother, Charles being the husband of
Water's sister)" -
