Tredwell7, Silas6

Tredwell Fleet7 Carman (Silas6, Silas5, Caleb4, Caleb3, John2, John1) was born 7 May 1807 probably in Manhasset, Suffolk County, New York; died 15 August 1880 in South Oyster Bay, Queens County, New York. He is the namesake of his older brother who died as an infant, and his middle name from his mother's maiden name.  He married 20 July 1829 to Eliza Anne (aka Ann Eliza) Hendrickson, born 1810 in New York; died 21 February 1877 in South Oyster Bay, Queens County, New York; daughter of Stephen and Mary (Carpenter) Hendrickson (Stephen being the son of Stephen and Hannah (Carman) Hendrickson) making Eliza's husband her first cousin once removed.

On the 1850 census for Oyster Bay, Tredwell lists himself as a farmer will real estate valued at $5,000 which is a good chunk of change for those times and demonstrates that he was making a comfortable living for his family.

In 1844, Grace Church, Massapequa, Queens County, New York was built and consecrated. Listed among those who held pews in the church at the time of consecration was Tredwell F. Carman.

A couple of years ago I was pleased to be contacted by someone who had found an old textbook that had Tredwell's signature inside the cover and the date 1826.

Tredwell was also in contact with those of the ":Carman Association" of the time, in response he sent the following letter:

"E. A. Carman, Esq. Dear Sir. I have been in communication with S.C. Carman of No.21 Courtland St, New York City and he says you are working at the same thing that he is. Now sir, I had Uncle Joshua, that was a doctor and settled in Fayetteville North Carolina, and was married there he left two sons Joshua and William J. I would have answered [your] circular sooner but I have been in communication with Mr. W.S. Carman I should be pleased to make your acquaintance. If my health was good I should be looking you up. My great-great-grandfather was John Carman came here from England somewhere about the date you mention in your circular from the old papers and deeds I have. I had a deed or a copy of a deed from four of the tribes of Indians signed with their marks for the south half of the Township of Hempstead and that deed is dated 1643 and made out in the names of John Carman and Robert Fordham, brothers-in-laws and so I conclude that our [Great-great] Grand[mother] must have been a Fordham. And I have a deed dated July 8th 1669 from S. F. Carman Co. of Jamaica sold my brother John Carman of Hempstead for a lot of Meadowland." - Treadwell F. Carman, Amityville post office, Suffolk County, L.I." (Carman file, Collection of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, New York City)
