William Stillwell Carman
"A nobleman by nature and a charming example of a gentleman of the old school, with all this implies, the untiring and ever liberal friend of those in distress, a founder and for many years the chief prop of the Harlem Dispensary and Relief Association. In life a loyal and beloved friend, a devoted husband and tender father, he died in the city of his birth, in his seventy-fifth year." - American Families of Historical Lineage, Long Island Edition, National Americana Society, NY, undated. William Stillwell Carman was born in New York City on 20 March 1820 and died there 11 June 1895. He was the author of extensive notes on the Carman family, which still reside in the New York City Public Library. His 'journals' are undoubtedly the best source of information on the Carman family written. He was chairman of "The Association of the Descendants of John and Florence Carman" and attended the reunion held in Hempstead, NY in 1881 and personally interviewed many of the families that attended. His works comprise volumes of genealogical information that would have otherwise been lost. He corresponded regularly with Ezra Ayres Carman and the two shared notes.
