Stephen6 Carman (Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Caleb3, John2, John1) was born in the year 1751 at Hempstead, Queens, New York. He died there on 13 September 1824 and is buried in St George's Church cemetery, Hempstead, where his grave and tombstone still are viewable. Stephen married four times and had children by each: 1) Sarah Pettit, born 1755, daughter of Joseph and Ann (Germain) Pettit, on 25 December 1769 at St George's Church. 2) Sarah Raynor (1750-1785) daughter of James Raynor, on 28 April 1777 at St George's Church. 3) Ann 'Rock' Smith, born 21 November 1760 at Merrick, Queens, New York, died 21 June 1791 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, daughter of John "Rock" and Rachel (Valentine) Smith, married on 30 October 1785 at St George's Church. 4) Elizabeth Smith, born 1758 and died 20 June 1834 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, widow of Joseph Dorlan and daughter of Joseph "Rock" and Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Smith, married on 28 July 1796 at, yes once again, St George's Church. Elizabeth is buried in the St George's Church cemetery. Biographical information on Stephen Carman can be found in the "a few biographies" page of this website. "In a deed dated 16 Feb 1780, John Simonson of Hempstead and his wife Rachel, convey to Stephen Carman of Jamaica, a lot comprising about 50 acres, nigh 'the town spot', which had been purchased from William Bedle, Esq., westerly by lands of said Sylvanus Bedle and Benjamin Lester, southerly by Silvester Bedle's land, and easterly by the highway to St George's Church, Hempstead (HTR 6:32-3) - (Genealogies of Long Island Families, from the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Henry Hoff, 1987) (Sylvanus Bedle mentioned above is his Uncle, brother of his mother)
