Stephen5 Carman (Richard4, Samuel3, John2, John1) was born about 1725 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died there on 14 June 1767, preceding his father in death. A letter of administration was granted to his brother, Richard Carman, and to his widow. Stephen married 16 August 1748 at Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey, Isabella Moores, born 1730 at Woodbridge, died 6 February 1809 at Woodbridge and is buried in the Old Metuchen Grounds.  She was the daughter of Samuel and Experience (Fitz Randolph) Moores and sister of Margaret Moores who married Stephen's brother, Samuel Carman.

"In Adj Gen Wm S. Strykers roster of the Revolution we find that Stephen Carman was Ensign, First Regiment of Middlesex Co. New Jersey State Troopers in the Revolutionary War. In Gen Strykers roster p.162. The name of Daniel, Moses, Nathan and Thomas Carman appear in the Continental service - and among the State Troops we find on page 532 the name of Daniel, Elijah, John of Essex Co, John of Somerset Co, Nathaniel of Monmouth Co, Richard of Middlesex Co., also Samuel and Thomas Carman." - Letter in the Carman file, New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
