Stephen5 Carman (John4, John3, John2, John1) was probably a farmer. During the American Revolution he appears to have remained neutral as his name does not appear in any record for either side. According to William Stillwell Carman in his Genealogical Journal No. 5, Stephen "went off" during the war. In 1781 he sold for two shillings part of his inheritance from is grandfather, John3. In 1784 he is probably the Stephen Carman named as Overseer of the Poor and was probably the Stephen Carman living at the "town spot" (founding settlement block) in Hempstead Village proper. Stephen was born 1733 at Hempstead Township, Queens, New York. He married first, Jane Burtis, daughter of Joseph Alburtis and Abigail Seaman and sister of Mary Burtis who married Stephen's half-brother Adam Carman, on 15 March 1757 at St George's Church in Hempstead. She died before 1763 in Hempstead. He married second Elizabeth Rhodes on 14 November 1763 also at St George's Church. Children of Stephen and Jane (Burtis) Carman:
