Samuel Serne Carman was born in 1782 at Hempstead, Queens, New York. He was the first Watchmaker and Jeweler in the City of Brooklyn. He learned his trade working next to Robert Fulton, the inventor of the Steam Boat. Samuel Serne Carman was also the City of Brooklyn's first Treasurer. He was also the last Treasurer before the City of Brooklyn was merged into the City of New York as a Borough. Family history passes down the story that Samuel would retire at night with a flintlock musket at the side of his bed - and the City treasury money bags under his bed. His father was Stephen Carman, brother of "Richard the Loyalist" and member of the New York State Assembly for some 30 years off and on. His mother was Sarah Raynor, third wife of Stephen Carman. Samuel married Elizabeth Gunnel and had ten children by her. Samuel died in Brooklyn in 1846.
