Rebecca⁵ Dorland (Miriam Carman⁴, John³, John², John¹) was born about 1718 in Hempstead, Queens County, New York, died 31 March 1787 in Hempstead, Queen County, New York.  She married Judge Samuel Clowes, born 30 August 1722 in Hempstead, Queens County, New York, died 10 May 1800 in Hempstead, Queens County, New York, son of Gerhardus and Sarah (Jones) Clowes.

"Referred to as Samuel Clowes, 3rd in brother John's will. Judge of the County Courts of Queens, filled the office of Surrogate of Queens County during the Revolution, member of the State Assembly 1790-1796, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead 1775 to 1783" - (Genealogies of Long Island Families, from the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Henry Hoff, 1987)

"Eldest son of Gerhardus Clowes and Sarah Jones, and Gerhardus was in turn son of Samuel and Catherine Clowes. This elder Samuel was born in Derbyshire, England, March 16, 1674, came to New York in 1697, and was the first Lawyer settled on Long Island. His son Samuel, as above, was a prominent man, and an active figure among the Loyalists of Queens County during the Revolution. He voted for "No Deputies" to the Provincial Congress, Nov 7-11, 1775, and signed the Loyalist petition of Queens County, Oct. 21, 1776. For his military service, see military section. He also signed an address, Aug. 5, 1780, to Governor Robertson of New York. In 1781 he was appointed clerk and surrogate. At the peace he fled with other Loyalists to St John, N.B., and was a grantee of that city. He soon returned to Hempstead, and, confidence having been restored, served as a member of the New York Assembly 1789-1796.
