Phineas6 Carman (Stephen5, Richard4, Samuel3, John2, John1) was born 9 September 1762 at Metuchen, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Know as "Major Carman", he served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in 1778 in the Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia, participated in the Battle of Springfield, New Jersey and other engagements, and was wounded in 1779.  He died 25 February 1827 in New York City.  He married in 1781 at Middlesex County, New Jersey, Huldah Ayers, born 14 July 1763 at Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey, died 11 October 1849 at New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey and is buried in the First Presbyterian Churchyard, Metuchen, Middlesex, New Jersey, daughter of James and Hope (Bloomfield) Ayers.
