Philadelphia6 Carman (Adam5, Benjamin4, Caleb3, John2, John1) was born in 1766 in Oyster Bay, Queens County, New York, named after her mother. Philadelphia married first, about 1793, Jacob Cronkhite, born 7 September 1768 in Bengall, Dutchess County, New York, and died in 1813, son of John and Susannah (Huff) Cronkhite. Philadelphia married second, Judah Bowerman, born 16 July 1779 and died in 1868, son of Ichabod and Jane (Richmond) Bowerman (whose other children figure conspicuously in the next few generations). It gets a little confusing as Judah Bowerman was married four times - Philadelphia being third wife. His first wife was Abigail Hughes who he married on 22 Jun1809 at the Yonges Street Friends Meeting, Newmarket, Ontario, daughter of Job and Eleanor Hughes and sister of Amy Hughes who married Stephen Bowerman. Second he married Mary Ann Morden. Fourth he married Lavina Saylor. Jacob and Philadelphia moved from Dutchess County, New York to Canada in 1796. They were members of the Society of Friends, and although they were Loyalists during the American Revolution, their religious convictions kept them from fighting for either side. As the conflict ended, they chose to live in a Loyalist community. In the assessment of Hallowell, Prince Edward County, Ontario for the year 1808, Jacob Cronkhite is listed as having 350 acres uncultivated and 45 acres under cultivation.
