"The First Real Estate Transaction in Hempstead"

November 13, 1643

Tackapousha, the "One-Eyed" sachem, and other Indians conveyed the land that comprises the present Town of Hempstead (and most of what is now Nassau County) to Reverend Robert Fordham and John Carman. John Carman is the man holding the axe (part of the payment for the 120,000 acres) and is the Patriarch of the Carman family here in America, arriving from England to Massachusetts in 1631. The boy on the lower left is his son, John Carman Jr., who witnessed the transaction and is my 9th Great-grandfather.

Robert Gaston Herbert painted this mural in the Hempstead Village Hall in 1947.  This image is from a commemorative poster made a few years ago for the 350th anniversary by Hempstead Village. If you go to see the original remember - it is the Hempstead Village Hall and not the Township of Hempstead.  They also "clipped" a piece off the mural photo, which can be seen on the artists record of his work.
