Matthias Carman
 

This collection of information comes from several sources.  But the biggest part of the information comes from the manuscript "The First Carman Family Reunion on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, October 7, 1984", by Mary Carman Fraley, and I'll let her introduce herself:

"In 1966 I caught the "genealogy bug" after becoming curious about a copy of a certificate dated November 1, 1881 that had hung on the wall of our house in Crisfield, Md. for years and learned through cousin Ringgold Lee Sterling that his mother, Mary Marple (Carman) Sterling 1866-1951 had copies made for some of the family, the original certificate No. 88 later being given to William Ringgold Carman (1896-1958). For those who may not have seen this certificate No. 88, it stated that John Lee Carman (1839-1914) was a member of the Association of the Descendents of John and Florence Carman who landed in America November 4, 1631, and settled at Hempstead, Long Island, New York, November 1643. For years I assumed we Carmans were descended from this illustrious couple. Information received from the Local History and Genealogy Division of the New York Public Library in 1966 convinced me that I should pay more attention to "fine print". The certificate does not say that John Lee Carman was a "descendant" - merely that he was a "Member of the Associations of the Descendants"..."

 Who is the Matthias Kurmann who was on the Ship 'Anderson' that arrived in Philadelphia on 25 August 1751? Who are the others - Gorg (George) Kirmann, Marx (Marcus) Kurrmann. We know who Michael Kurmann was - "Yoeman's Service", Being an account of the first Carman's from Kehl, Germany to come to America, their sojourn in Pennsylvania and New York, and their activities as Loyalist pioneers in Canada (1708-1840), by William B. Carman, Laguna Niguel, California, September 1981 (privately published). So who are the others? They all arrive in Philadelphia at the same time. The facts are missing, but the circumstantial evidence is that the line of Maryland German Carman's is of this same family. In fact John Adam Carman of the known branch in Canada, who is born and dies there, comes down and gets married in Maryland. These two lines do tie together. The actual tie is unknown to me, but needs to be presented for what it is. As I have two lines that are both starting from known Michael Kirman's, they can't be the same person, for this reason I speculate that it is probably through Matthias that this line starts, a namesake for his brother. But the father of the son listed could also be George or Marcus as well. The naming tends to suggest Matthias though.

JAMES LEE.  She was born 05 June 1773 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died 30 September 1858 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

9.  JOHN LEE5 CARMAN (JOHN LEE4, JACOB3, MICHAEL2, MATTHIAS1 KIRMAN) was born 20 January 1839 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died 09 November 1914.  He married SUSAN JANE HARPLE.  She was born 29 June 1939, and died 14 September 1917.
