Mary5, Caleb4

Mary5 Carman (Caleb4, James3, Caleb2, John1) was born in 1755 at Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey. She married on 25 April 1771 to John Oliver, born in France on 22 September 1733. John had served as Quartermaster in the New Jersey Line during the American Revolution.  Among the family descendants there is a story that there was a portrait of Benjamin Franklin painted by Francis Hopkinson, and given to John Oliver by Benjamin Franklin. The story could well be true as Mr. Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was known to have been familiar with Mary's father Caleb Carman as well as her brother John Carman, and was also from Bordentown.  Mary died on 30 June 1820 in Bordentown, Burlington, New Jersey.  John died also in Bordentown on 7 April 1824.
