To the victor, goes the spoils as the saying goes. Faced with confiscation of their property and actual physical abuse and humiliation, and a rebel government they did not recognize, Loyalist families fled for safety and continued loyalty to King George, most to Canada. One-third of the population of Long Island left Long Island at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War in 1783. The following families were associated with the Carman family during those times.
