Legacy of Slavery

Slavery in the United States, history tells us, ended with the American Civil War.  But that was 1865 and the Carman family had been here on the North American continent for 234 years before that event ended.  And the practice of the land in those earlier times, both North and South, was to own slaves for use as servants and farm labor. To try to ignore that it ever was that way would be the easy way out.  So I make a humble attempt, with the little documentation we have, to present those whose have heritage and proper claim to the name Carman.  But reality is that there is little recorded information to be found.
