Joshua Carman, son of Joshua Carman (the term "Jr" wasn't generally used until the later 1800s), was born 1715 in Hempstead, Queens, New York. He died in 1785 at Beekman's Precinct, Dutchess County, New York. He married at St George's Church in Hempstead, Sarah Hewlett, daughter of Lewis Hewlett and Grace Hallett, on 8 April 1740. Joshua moved to Beekman's Precinct, Dutchess County, New York sometime between 1730 and 1740 along with his brother John Carman, each settling on separate homestead. In July of 1775 he signed the Pledge of support for the American Revolution. Joshua served as Adjutant to Colonel Jocobus Swartwout's battalion of Minute Men during the Revolutionary War (his son-in-law, Cornelius Van Wyck, a Captain, was killed a the Battle of White Plains). A letter of Administration for the estate of Joshua Carman was granted 23 November 1785 to his widow, Sarah Carman, and his son-in-law Robert Sands.
