Joshua3
Carman
(John2,
John1) was born in 1670 in Hempstead, Queens, New York, and died 1742 in Hempstead, Queens, New York.
He married Grace "Rock" Smith in Hempstead,
Long Island; daughter of Jonathan Smith and
Grace Mott.
She was born 1678 in Hempstead, Queens, New York.
"Joshua Carman had a lot of 10 acres "near ye head of Cowneck... lying
at ye south end of Thomas Bedel 50 acres" in the proprietary right of Mr.
Carman (HTR 8:277). On 10 Sept 1741 Adam Mott conveys a parcel near 'ye
head of cowneck" bounded northerly, by Cow neck fence, easterly by the
highway which separated the plot from the swamp, on which Thomas Pearsall's mill
stood, and southerly by land of Thomas Bedell (HTR 3:367) to Richard Mott, Sara
Mott, Edmond Mott, and Thomas Pearsall, all of Queens County, as executors of
the last will of Richard Mott, sold to John Pine of Hempstead (John
Pine will become his brother-in-law - your webmaster), land at the
head of Cow Neck which the had bought from Adam Mott said land being north of
Thomas Bedell's land, deed dated 30 Mar 1744 (HTR 8:282) - New York Genealogical
and Biographical Record, article by Henry A. Tredwell Jr, Brooklyn, NY. (Adam
Mott is the grandfather of Joshua's wife - your webmaster);
"Although Joshua was to receive half interest in his father's mills upon
his majority, it is not known of he followed that occupation. He was prob. a
farmer from as early as 1708, at least (HTR 2:325). He lived on Cow Neck,
Hempstead, prob. as early as 1698, as his name occurs on the census near those
of the Sands family of Sands Point, which is at the tip of said neck (REC 45:54
ff), certainly as early as 1714 (HTR 3:459) and as late as 1735 (HTR 3:222). He
owned other property too (HTR 5:209, 8:276/7, 286, 458). He was one of the
seven men appointed in 1723 to allot the undivided lands of Hempstead, etc., at
which task he was engaged until 1742, a laborious (HTR 8:270 ff, 435 ff) and
thankless (HTR 3:266) job, but evidently a profitable one, for none of the seven
appointed gave up the task unless death intervened (HTR 8:270 ff, 435 ff). His
name does not occur in Hempstead again after 1742, perhaps he retired, possibly
he died, or perhaps he removed to Dutchess County whither two of his sons had
gone." - "John-1 Carman of Hempstead Long Island and
Some of his Descendants Thru His Son John-2", paper by Henry Alanson
Tredwell, Jr.
Joshua's wife was a member of the
"Rock" Smith
family which were a closely allied family to the Carmans over the years. Grace's
brother, Zophar Smith, will marry Glorianna Carman who is a daughter of Silas
Carman (Silas himself marrying a Smith).
