Josiah Bull was born in 1714 at South Kingston, Rhode Island. He was one of the first settlers of Beekman Precinct, Dutchess County, New York and the names of his children are recorded in the Oblong Meeting records of the Society of Friends. The Society of Friends were the earliest settlers of the Oblong area. He married in 1737 at South Kingston, Rhode Island, Ruth Tripp who was another family of early arrival in the colonies and of Dutch origin, and happened to own two hundred acres of land which would become part of New York City. The family lived close to the Hudson River and not far from Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York. As Quakers, the Bull's were no less victims of abuse during the Revolution than others of their religion. Two brothers were taken prisoner and sent to New York City, unknown to the family; one died in captivity while the second was rescued by family only to die shortly afterwards. Children of Josiah and Ruth (Tripp) Bull:
