Joseph Henry5 Carman (Caleb4,James3, Caleb2, John1) was born in May of 1745 in Bordentown, Burlington, New Jersey. During the American Revolution he served in 1776-77 as a private in Capt. William Crogan's company, Col. Abraham Bowman's 8th Virginia regiment. He married Mary LaRue in Virginia in 1768. He later moved down the Ohio River and later landed at the mouth of Beargrass where Louisville now is. There were three little pote cabins there at that time . He then went up about thirty miles and settled in what is now Shelby County at Linches Station. In 1787 he was killed by Indians along a creek there - evermore known as "Carman's Creek." Here starts the large and historic branch of the family that intermarries with the LaRue family. And from the get-go it is linked two Carman lines. Joseph Henry Carman and his wife Mary Carman LaRue are both grandchildren of James Carman and Margaret Duwys. Mary LaRue, Joseph's wife was born 22 February 1752 at Long Marsh, Frederick, Virginia. Daughter of Isaac LaRue and Phebe Carman (Phebe was Joseph Henry's Aunt). After her husbands death in 1787 she remarried to John Harris in 1797 by which there are no issue. Mary died about 1848 at South Fork, Hardin County, Kentucky. children of Joseph Carman and Mary (LaRue) Carman:
