Joseph3, John2

Joseph3 Carman (John2, John1) was born in 1676 at Hempstead Town , Queens County, New York.  He died in 1763 at Murderkill, Kent County, Delaware.  He married about 1699 (based on the ages of his children) Hannah ______, who died in 1732.

"In 1698 he was doubtless residing with his brother Thomas at Hempstead (REC 45:54 ff)... In 1699 he was the grantee, from his brother John-3 of several lots of land in Hempstead; the grantee is described as "of Hempstead in the deed (HTR 5:207). His name next occurs on the town books in 1724 when Adam Mott of Hempstead sold to Thomas-3 Carman some land on Hicks Neck which grantor had bought of Joseph Carman (prob. No.14 [this Joseph]) (HTR 5:196). Of 4 May 1723 Michael Duchen sold to Joseph-3 Carman of Hempstead 134 acres of the northwestern side of Staten Island for the sum of 500 pounds. The deed was executed 21 Mar 1723/4 (Richmond Co., N.Y. Conveyances, Libre C, p.282). Doubtless Joseph removed from Hempstead to Staten Island about the latter date. He appeared as plaintiff in suits in 1727 and 1731 (p.146, Rec.of Court of Common Pleas, Richmond Co., N.Y.). In 1730 Adam Mott, Joseph Carman (prob. no.14) & Company of Staten Island petitioned the authorities with regards to the oil and bone of a whale which had been wounded by them in New York Bay and afterward had been cast ashore at Cape May, N.J.; which petition was granted. On 18 Feb 1731/2 Joseph Carman and w. Hannah, of Richmond County, sold 134 acres to Stephen Wood of same County (Richmond Co. Conveyances, liber D, p.27). His name does not occur again on the records of that County."- "John-1 Carman of Hempstead, Long Island and Some of his Descendants Thru His Son John-2", Henry Alanson Tredwell, Jr.

On April 9, 1729, a petition was filed by Adam Mott, Joseph Carman "and company" of Staten Island , for the oil and bone of a whale wounded by them in the bay of New York, and afterwards cast ashore at Cape May. Petition was granted. The next day Adam Mott, Henry Young and Joseph Carman swore out depositions on the matter.
