John8, John7

John8 Carman (John7, Adam6, John5, John4, John3, John2, John1) was born about 1811 in Baldwins, Queens County, New York and died before the 1870 census.  On the 1850 census he lists his occupation as 'Bayman', which would principally be harvesting Oysters and Clams along the south shore of Long Island.  He married 28 July 1840 to Eleanor Clayton, born 1817 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey, died sometime after the 1880 census, where she last appears, widowed and living alone.  How John met Eleanor, I can only speculate as she appears to be a true New Jersey girl with her parents born in New Jersey as well, and she apparently went back to New Jersey for the birth of her third child (for help from her mother?).  It is possible John met her while delivering his oysters and clams to market. Ships leaving "Lott's Landing" in Baldwin frequently sailed to Elizabethtown.
