John Carman was born 4 October 1761 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey, died 9 September 1837 at Delphi, Onondaga County, New York and is buried there. He married on 27 March 1775 in Monmouth County, New Jersey to Deborah Carman, born 4 April 1756 at Middletown, Monmouth County, New York, died 24 May 1830 at Cincinnatus, Courtland County, New York, Deborah being a third cousin to John, daughter of John and Catherine (White) Carman. John served in the Revolutionary War with the Third New Jersey Regiment, known by their more historic name the "Jersey Blues" because of their blue jackets and red lapels. And because of all the John Carmans located around New York in the latter years he is referred to by his nickname "Jersey Blue" John Carman ( the others being "Low Point" John, "Squire" John and John "the Refugee"). Much of the units activities during the Revolution were in New York, and it may be for this reason that John in latter years sought admission to and died in the Old Soldier's Home in Onondaga, New York.
