John4 Carman (Joshua3, John2, John1) was born about 1707 in Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York, died 29 January 1771 at Beekman, Dutchess County, New York. John was married three times - He married first on 18 August 1731 at St. George's Church, Hempstead, Queens, New York, Lovinia Kissam (as her second husband), born 1710 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, died before 1738 at Beekman, Dutchess County, New York, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Coombs) Kissam, and Aunt of Hannah Strang who married Gabriel Carman. John married second on 8 February 1738/39 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, Mary Smith of Hempstead, Queens, New York.  John married third on 22 April 1775 on Long Island, New York, Mary Cornell, born 14 December 1676, died 8 October 1766, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Cornell.  Mary had been previously married to Joseph Doughty and had one son with him, Joseph Doughty, Jr. who married Mary Carman, daughter of this John Carman and his second wife Mary Smith.
