Joel Ernest Carman was born 13 August 1882 at St Charles, Madison County, Iowa. He died in January 1966 and is buried in the St Charles Cemetery, South Township, Madison County, Iowa. He married Gertrude L. Hancox, born 16 November 1883, died 25 January 1942. Joel lived on the family farm in his early years, but left for a career in academia rather than farming. The farm contained one of famous from the book and movie "Bridges of Madison County", Joel Ernest Carman graduated from Simpson College in Madison County (where in later years he established a scholarship for residents of Madison County, and also where he met his wife), received his PhD in Geology from the University of Chicago, and was head of the Geology department at Ohio State for many years and his portrait is in the library of Orton Hall, the geology building there until his retirement in 1953.
