Jeremiah Carman was born about 1822 in Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York, and he appears on the 1850 census as a Wheelwright in that Township. He was married on 22 May 1847 in Hempstead, Queens, New York by Rev. Peter Corse, who by custom of the time was also African-American, to Maria Louisa Tredwell, born about 1827 in Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York. Their parentage is unknown. Both are listed as "Black" on the 1850 census for Hempstead. They had one son I know of: Jeremiah Carman, Jr. was born 15 June 1848 in Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York. Jeremiah enlisted in the Civil War as a Private in the 20th U.S. Colored Troops, Company I. He died during the war in 1864 in Louisiana and is buried in Monument National Cemetery, Chalmette, Louisiana.
