Benjamin R. Carman, Lance Corporal, United States Marine Corps - 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, age 20, of Jefferson, Iowa. Killed by hostile fire in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq on April 6, 2004 (his Grandfather's birthday) at what is now know as the Battle of Ar Ramadi. He and ten other Marines and one Navy Corpsman were holding a position, Lance Corporal Carman was a team leader of a machine gun position directing fire when he was hit. From eye-witness accounts, before he fell, there were 88 dead insurgents from both the machine gun fire Ben had directed and from the remainder of the squad and a 4-man Sniper team as they pursued and drove off the attackers. Edward William Carman, Staff Sergeant, United States Army, 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Regiment, 1st Calvary, age 27, father of a three year old daughter and one year old son. Killed in Baghdad, Iraq on April 17, 2004 when the track on his M1 Abrams Tank broke, causing the driver to lose control and the tank ran off a bridge, and it rolled over on Ed in the turret.
