Hempstead Divided

In 1783, as the British left Long Island in defeat, the Town of Hempstead found itself divided.  The residence of the north part of Hempstead were primarily Whigs, the south part Tories.

With their new freedom the people of the northern part of town, wanting no more to do with the Loyalists seceded from the Town of Hempstead and formed their own Town of North Hempstead, which is still as it is today.
