Ezra Ayres8 Carman received his name in honor of his maternal grandfather. He was born 27 February 1834 at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He attended and graduated from Western Military Institute, Kentucky in 1856. He then taught mathematics at the University of Nashville, Tennessee. As the Civil War commenced he volunteered and was commissioned as Lt. Colonel of the 7th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers on 3 September 1861. He was wounded (shot in the right arm) at the Battle of Williamsburg, and discharged from the 7th New Jersey on 8 July 1862 - this was to accommodate his promotion and taking command as Colonel of 13th New Jersey who he took through some of the bloodiest battles of the war including Antietam, Chattanooga, and Gettysburg. Ezra married first, Louisa Salmon, born 6 November 1828 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky and died 12 August 1857 at Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana, 7 days after the birth of her only child, daughter of John Salmon of England and Wilhelmina Neff who had been born in France. Ezra married second, Ada Salmon, sister of Louisa, on 22 November 1859 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Jeffersonville, Indiana, born 1 November 1839 at New Harmony, Indiana, and died 22 July 1916 in Los Angeles, California. Ezra Ayres Carman was living with his son, Louis at the time of his death, on Christmas Day, 1909 in Washington, D.C. His wife Ada being in Los Angeles at the time caring for her blind brother. Ezra died of pneumonia and his death certificate was signed by his son, Louis who was a medical doctor. Ezra Ayres Carman was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
