Clowes

Named after Maj. Timothy Bagley, who married the widow of Major Thomas Jones of Fort Neck. Major Jone's daughter, Sarah, was the mother of Timothy Bagley Clowes. Lived in Hempstead at the 'town spot'. Very probably an Inn-keeper. All his children, except Joseph, were loyalists and went to New Brunswick in 1783, where they spent the remainder of their lives. - "Genealogies of Long Island Families", New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Henry Hoff, 1987, Genealogical Publishing, Baltimore, vol. I, p.297.

Children: Gerhardus Clowes & John Clowes, both died without children; Sarah Clowes married Edward Allison. All three left for Canada at the peace in 1783.

Only one of Timothy Bagley Clowes' children was not a Loyalist, and remained on Long Island - Joseph Clowes. Born 15 January 1759, he died 4 May 1832; and is buried in the St George's Churchyard. He married first, Elizabeth Carman on 15 July 1781 at St George's Church, Hempstead, Queens, New York, daughter of Benjamin Carman and sister of Richard the Loyalist.  She died shortly after in 1782 and is buried in the St George's Churchyard. They had no children.

Joseph Clowes married second on 6 March 1786, Hannah Van Wyck, daughter of Theodorus Van Wyck, born 18 October 1764, she died 9 June 1847. Children of Joseph Clowes and Hannah Van Wyck are: Timothy, Mary, Theodorus Van Wyck ( Theodorus Van Wyck Clowes inherited the property of his Uncles John & Gerhardus Clowes in New Brunswick, Canada. ), and Gerhardus.
