By the 1790 Federal Census there were already ten John Carman's listed at heads of households across the then United States. And with the family already having been in North America for more than 150 years by then it is not too surprising. But not all can be claimed as members of the same direct descendants of John and Florence Carman. So this is where the fun begins. Most of you new to researching the Carman family probably do not realize how far and wide and influential the family was, especially in the 18th and 19th century. In Nassau County, Long Island there are 29 Carman Streets and Avenues; In Suffolk County 9, three located in Amityville - Carman Road, Carman Place and Carman Court. Carman River is Long Island's principle wild life habitat today running through Suffolk County. There is a Carman Avenue in the Gettysburg National Cemetery (so named in honor of General Ezra Ayres Carman), A Carman Monument at the Vicksburg National Cemetery. The town of Carmanville, Newfoundland, Canada; Carman, Manitoba, Canada; Carman, Idaho; Carman, Illinois (founded by Joseph Carman in 1870); Carmanville, New York is now a recreation area for New York City, developed by Richard Carman, and was once the scene of battle in the Revolutionary War. And three Carman Cemeteries in three separate Counties in Illinois. So don't think trying to lay out all these branches of the family in one humble website is a minor thing. You out there looking for simple answers have picked on the wrong family to belong to!
