Benjamin4
Carman (Caleb3, John2,
John1) was born about 1688 in Hempstead, Queens, New York died probably before
before 1735. He married Anne Mott, daughter of Adam and Mary (Stillwell)
Mott.
In his
father's will : "I leave to my son Benjamin, my house and home
lot in Hempsted; bounded north by my
brother John's land, east by highway, north
by Samuel Hinery (or Ginery?), and west by highway... I leave to my two youngest
sons, Samuel and Benjamin, all my meadow at Coe Neck, and all my meadow at Hicks
Neck."
"On 3 June 1698 a "Ben Carman" witnessed
the deed from John-3 to the heirs of Benjamin-3, dec.(HTR 2:140). If this
witness was not a "Sam" mistaken for a "Ben" it must have been Benjamin-4 for
Benjamin-4, son of Samuel-3, was about 2 years old at the time of the document
and could have not very well have been witnessed by Benjamin-4, deaf mute, and
son of the Benjamin-3. In his father's will Benjamin was to receive the house
and home lot in the "South Woods", bounded north by the lands of John Mott, east
and south by lands of the Gildersleeves, and west by Benjamin-4 Carman (HTR
5:465 ff). In 1731 a Benjamin Carman, adult, was baptized at St. George's
Church, Hempstead ("Adv. For God"). This was more likely Benjamin-4 than
Benjamin-5, born 1714 ("more likely" issued because "adult" on Church records
did not always mean those who were over 21 years.) In 1735 Henry Seaman conveyed
to Thomas-3 Carman, 5 acres of meadow on Hicks Neck, bounded north and east by
meadows already belonging to the grantee, south by grantees "island lot", and
west by land belonging to the children of Benjamin Carman (HTR 5:203 ff). This
last Benjamin may be the member who died 1694, but because of the lapse of time;
the 1727 notice which doubtless refers to Benjamin-4; the 1731 notice which
prob. refers to the latter; and because no later notice of [Benjamin-4] No.25
has come to the writer's attention, he think that Benjamin died before 1735 and
was the man referred to in the deed." -
