Benjamin3, John2

Born in 1661 in Hempstead, he received  a "home lot" (there were lots also given out for the purpose of wood and other uses)  from the town in 1684. In 1685 he was listed as the owner of 170 acres in Hempstead (HTR 8:130). He recorded a stock mark the same year consisting of a swallowfork in the right ear and a split in it (ear or mark?) (HTR 2:115) prob. the same mark as his father."

Benjamin married Deliverance Townsend (daughter of Richard Townsend and Elizabeth Wickes, sister of John Townsend) about 1680 and they had seven children.  The eldest son, Benjamin was a deaf mute, which was a hereditary trait in some of the Carman family lines - his Uncle Joshua was probably also afflicted with it (which gave birth to the fable of Caleb the first white child born in Hempstead being blind).  As a result the second son, John was given charge of Benjamin in his father's will.
