Alfred8, John7

Alfred8 Carman (John7, Daniel6, Elijah5, William4, John3, Caleb2, John1) was born on 21 November 1826 in Monmouth County, New Jersey (probably Cranbury), and died 27 November 1863 at Locust Grove, Virginia.  He married on 28 August 1850 to Sarah Bennett, born about 1822.  After Alfred's death Sarah remarried to a Mr. Berger about 1865.

Alfred served in the Civil War, enlisting as a  Corporal in Company H, Fourteenth Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers on 13 August 1862 (presumably the upper photo).  He was killed in action at Locust Grove, Virginia on 27 November 1863.  Alfred died in the fight that is known as the "Battle of Mile Run", which started with skirmishes around Robertson's Tavern in Locust Grove, Virginia on the 27th, the day he was killed. The battle was an attempt by General George Meade to flank General Robert E. Lee.  It didn't work and three days later the Union forces withdrew from the action to camp and wait out winter.
